Model Aircraft Monthly 2006-04

During this period it was assumed that the defence policy of the UK would be based on the principle of deterrence of war in all its forms and OR 343 stated that by 1965, the RAF would require a new aircraft to carry out tactical strike and reconnaissance operations, using both nuclear and conventional weapons, enabling the RAF to continue to provide tactical support for the Army, to make an effective contribution to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACUR)'s forces and Britain's other regional pacts such as Central Treaty Organisation and South East Asia Treaty Organisation. In addition to this, such an aircraft would also allow the RAF to deter, and if necessary to fight, limited wars in theatres outside Europe as part of its commitments to maintain the internal and external security of those territories for which it was responsible, to whom there were obligations, or in which the UK had essential economic interests.
