THE collection of model armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) provides for a diversity of interests. There are possibilities for modellers interested in tanks, armoured cars, self-propelled guns, modified trucks, etc., together with a wide range of all kinds of weapons, equipment and specialised uniforms. AFV modelling can begin with simple assembly and painting of a kit straight from the box but can also lead to the creation of impressive dioramas showing heavily weathered vehicles in realistic combat situations. There are several major factors to take into consideration when modelling AFVs. Firstly, assembly, then painting and weathering the vehicle; the assembly, conversion and the painting of figures to go with the vehicle and the creation of realistic setting. Let us begin with assembly. It is most important to study the instruction sheet very carefully; then make the decision which version you intend to make. There are radical differences between the appearance of a tank in the Western Desert and another on the Russian Front. Sometimes these differences can affect seriously very early stages of construction, applying, for example, to sandshields and the application of mud.
