Sky Model No.33

This kit is supplied in a large (for the size of the kit) box and a brief history is given on the side. Inside are the instructions, a decal sheet, and three plastic bags. The first bag contains a grey injection-moulded sprue with only a little visible flash and nice engraved detail. Some of the pour gates are quite large and will require careful trimming. The second bag holds the resin pieces for the cockpit detail, machine guns and the rotary engine. The final bag contains the etched-brass detail set and an acetate film for the instrument panel. No pilot or observer figures are supplied. I was under the impression that the 1 1/2 Strutter was a two-seat aircraft until I did some research and found it was produced in both a single and two seat configuration. When it entered service in 1916 it was the first aircraft to have air brakes and a variable incidence tailplane. It was also the first British aircraft to use the synchronised machine gun to fire through the propeller arc.

Displaying Your Model

I think I should start by saying that in this book I'm setting out to achieve the rather difficult task of creating a work that will be of help, or at least of interest, to a wide readership ranging from the beginner to the more experienced modeller. Many of us build models just for the fun of it, and then put them on a shelf and derive pleasure from simply looking at them, but now and then we get the urge to enter one in a competition and have our work judged by our peers. Whether this is a local club event, a large national show or even an international such as EuroMilitaire, that is the moment when we want our model - figure, vignette or diorama - to be presented in the best way. The choices we make about how the model is to be 'displayed' obviously cannot be a separate afterthought, and should usually be integral to the planning of the piece from the early stages. They can add to the appeal even of a single figure or vehicle, and become more important the larger the vignette or diorama is to be. An added dimension over recent years is the question of model photography, which is itself a type of 'display'. Nowadays quite sophisticated digital photographic effects are increasingly available and affordable, and while I have not gone into technicalities in this book the presentation of some of the photos provided for it by fellow modellers makes this relevant.

Modelling the US Army M4 (75MM) Sherman Medium Tank

The Sherman was the most widely used Allied tank of World War 11 and was built in larger numbers than all German tanks combined. Due to the enormity of the subject, this book takes a look at part of the Sherman story in World War 11, the 75mm gun versions used by the US Army in the European Theater of Operations (ETO). The primary focus of this book is on 1/35 scale, but with the revival of 1/48-scale kits from Tamiya and Hobby Boss, a 1/48-scale project is also included. In 1942, the US Army decided to limit its combat use of the Sherman to versions with the R-975 radial engine, namely the M4 and M4A1 tanks. These two types are in fact identical except that the M4A1 used a cast upper hull while the M4 used a welded hull. Other types of Shermans, such as the diesel-powered M4A2 and the M4A4 with the Chrysler multi-bank engine, were reserved for Lend Lease, though the US Army did use some for training in the United States. So for most of the combat from Operation Torch in November 1942 through the Italian campaign, and up to D-Day and the campaign in France, the M4 and M4A1 were the standard US Army types.

FineScale Modeler - Painting Tips

Although my father and I have both recently returned to the hobby he introduced me to as a boy, I knew from his daily calls that his new hobby room would not be up and running when I arrived. What could I build on a sunny, sandy beach in south Florida? Something straight out of the box might be good. I couldn't imagine even my wife's hawk eyes finding any lost photoetched parts in the sand, so box-stock it would be. I know many modelers don't find it challenging to build straight out of the box, so I decided this particular piece would be primarily a painting project. After surveying my small collection of German armor for this painting exercise, I began to see I had a particular repetitive style of painting camouflage. I began to think that maybe we develop a personal style of painting camouflage, not too dissimilar to our own penmanship. "Here is my painting challenge," I thought. Having assembled my Tamiya Panzer IV (kit No. 35181) in Florida, I began my painting project back in Chicago. I decided I would use Silly Putty as a mask to paint each of my camouflage patterns by pushing and pulling the putty to produce shapes and contours that my particular style would not normally create. I was quite pleased with the results of this simple technique.

Modelling Scale Aircraft

Building scale model aircraft is an absorbing pastime that can encompass a broad range of interests and skills. A proficiently created scale model can vividly evoke a key moment in history, and be an attractive addition to a mantelpiece or display cabinet. Despite competition from hi-tech leisure pursuits and the spiralling cost of mainstream manufacturing, the hobby of scale aircraft modelling has reached a pinnacle of variety and quality. Thanks to new short-run plastic injection moulding technologies and the superiority of resin details, modellers in the 21st century can build impressive replicas of almost any military aircraft that has ever taken to the sky. With the emergence of the internet, scale modellers now have access to technical and historical resources that earlier generations could only dream of. It has also put them in real-time contact with other modellers and historians across the globe. For all of these reasons, there has never been a better time to build plastic models.

This kit is injection moulded in grey plastic which is rather thin and brittle. The parts, the majority of which are quite small, are contained on one thick rectangular sprue which helps to protect them from damage. Despite their size the parts are well moulded and have a slightly matt finish to them and the aileron, elevator and rudder hinge lines are all well defined. Russian is the predominant language. One single double-sided sheet of multilingual A4, one side gives a potted history of this aircraft that was the first Russian fighter aircraft, with four views of this diminutive aircraft showing the position of the markings together with the paint colours. The reverse side shows exploded assembly diagrams, which also show side and front views of the undercarriage area, which proved very useful during construction. The instructions themselves are quite easy to follow and items to be painted are called out in an exploded view. The paint codes refer to both Humbrol and Tamiya colours.

The Art of The Diorama

THIS ARTICLE is the first in a series devoted to designing and building boxed dioramas. Over the past 15 years I've built more than 100 such dioramas, and I hope to pass along many of my ideas and techniques to Fine-Scale Modeler readers. No other kind of modeling grabs and holds viewers like a diorama, because a diorama tells a story. In fact, the roots of the word "diorama" mean "a story in the round." Many of us have childhood memories of marveling at life-size dioramas in natural history museums, and miniature boxed dioramas are just as popular. I've watched museum visitors take time to examine all the details in miniature dioramas, while other seemingly more spectacular exhibits rated only a passing glance. Why? Why dioramas are popular. A boxed diorama is a complete package that combines sculpture, painting, fine craftsmanship, and even custom lighting in a self-contained unit. However, the reasons for its popularity are far more complex than simple appreciation of the skills required to execute the work. At its best, a diorama is not a simple static model, but an art medium capable of conveying a tale, a mood, or even evoking an emotional response. Because of this complexity, choosing the subject matter and designing the diorama require attention to artistic principles that most modelers may not be familiar with.

AA was kind enough to send as along a cool selection of photos of their new Centurion AYRE 165 (Gulf War). This is their typical resin, PE and white metal deal. It makes up the ultra long-in-the-tooth version of the Centurion used in the 1991 conflict It's kind of hard to believe that the use of this tank spans almost fifty years. The model is all decked out with the up-armored lower hull, passive side armor, reactive turret and hull front armor, smoke dischargers and MIMIC coil. AA likes to do the value thing, so the kit includes all the equipment, stowage and fittings needed to really trick it out Interesting to note that the kit is specifically described as "minus facine cradle." Some of AA's other engineering vehicles have been released in different configurations, so maybe we'll see more of the 165. AA's kit number here is K76 and the listed UK retail is 187.50. This is usually higher outside Great Britain. Squadron Signal is "The Man" in the US.

Originally developed to fight against the German "Panther' and 'Tiger" tanks of WWII, the M26 "Pershing" saw limited service by the end of hostilities in Europe and the Pacific. However, the end of WWII brought the Cold War to bear, with the first "hot" battlefield being in Korea in 1950. Known by many as the "forgotten war", the conflict in Korea has garnered little interest from the scale modeling community, due to a perceived lack of use of armored fighting vehicles. Obviously, this was simply not the case. The North Koreans were well armed by their Soviet and Chinese backers with the latest in military weaponry, most notably the very lethal T-34/85 tanks. This was where the M26 "Pershing" was truly able to exploit it's abilities. Initially armed with a 90mm M3 main gun, the "Pershing' became the basis for the standard U.S. Medium tank, evolving into what would become the highly successful "Patton" tank series, many of which are still in service around the world today.

The LVT-4 enjoyed many improvements over the earlier LVT series with the repositioning of the engine behind the driver s compartment, including a rear loading ramp and a larger cargo area. The rear opening ramp simplified loading & unloading, and provided landing troops with better protection when dismounting, and the cargo area was large enough to carry jeeps or 105mm howitzers. The LVT-4 was produced in more numbers than any other LVT production run, accounting for almost half of all LVT production. It saw extensive use in the pacific theater by the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, and by England and Italy in Europe. There has not been an injection plastic kit of the LVT series of vehicles for modelers until the new Italeri LVT-4 'Water Buffalo appropriately filled the void. The basic kit is quite good (although the benches in the cargo bed are curious), and just BEGS for an interior. VP has responded in kind with a full interior, complete with a detailed driving compartment and fully exposed engine compartment.

How to Paint Citadel Miniatures

The first thing you will need is a place where you can paint comfortably. It is important not to underestimate the effect this will have on your work. If you create an environment that is relaxing, you will look forward to your painting sessions as a chance to get away from everyday drudgery. Give yourself some space and you will be able to work longer and more effectively too. So, start by making some room for painting, preferably well away from the family or TV, in your own room or den where you won't be disturbed. You will need a reasonably sized flat surface, such as a table or desk, positioned as closely to a window as possible to provide plenty of natural daylight. We'll come to the matter of artificial lighting in due course, but for now let it be said that there is nothing as good as natural light when it comes to distinguishing colour and detail - so take advantage of it when you can.

Rozkwit modelarstwa pionierskiego zauważyć też można na różnych imprezach i zawodach modelarskich, gdzie organizatorzy tworzą osobne kategorie chcąc uszanować ten do niedawna zapomniany okres lotnictwa. The release of 1:9 scale (200mm) resin figures seems to have slowed to a almost a complete halt in recent times, but fortunately Warriors Scale models are still releasing the odd gem now and again. The most recent is of a German general at Stalingrad, sculpted by Brian Stewart, which is quite an unusual composition as most of the available figures of generals are often sculpted in static poses, displaying little movement other than possibly reading a map. This one has broken the mould as he is depicted stealthily observing the enemy with his binoculars from the relative safety of a bombed out industrial site. I quite often comment about originality when I write reviews about Warriors' figures, but the fact is that they seem to have a gift for delivering something different every time , as with their 'Panzer Knacker,' 'D-Day Ranger,' 'Sherman Tank Commander,' etc., these figures all have a unique quality, whether it's the pose, or the substantial and well-designed scenic bases.

In late 1944, somewhere on the vast Eastern Front, the Germans are giving up their conquests and trying to stay in front of the Ked Army. A retreat under fire is an attempt to create order out of chaos. This diorama represents such a time in the life of an army. This diorama features a disabled Panzer IV/70(A). A tank destroyer on the Panzer IV chassis, it mounted the long-barreled 75mm PaK42. Except for the lower superstructure, which was vertical, the vehicle was similar to the Panzer IV/70, thus the "A" designation. Between August 1944 and March 1945, 278 were produced. It was nose-heavy and had all-steel road wheels at the first four positions. Most of the Panzer IV/70 (A)s were deployed to the Eastern front. These are the basic parts of the kit with the carriers removed and mounted for painting. Just a small amount of cleaning up is needed and can be done with a hobby knife and sandpaper. I then scrub them with Scotchbrite, and prime with Polly S Flat varnish. It is allowed to dry for 24 hours. The tunic that sticks out from the smock is painted Humbrol Matt Olive Drab 66. The helmet is painted Matt 67 Tank Gray and Matt 64 Light Gray using a wet-on-wet technique.

Military Miniatures in Review No.16

Faring the vast numerical superiority of Soviet tanks in 1942, the duties of the successful assault gun units changed. Introduced originally to spearhead infantry attacks and to break enemy resistance, the necessity of fighting tanks became more and more essential. So assault gun units had to take over the main battle tank role, all too often leaving the infantry without support. Parallel to this development, the short barreled 7.5 cm gun was dropped in mid 1942, giving way to longer caliber guns. The first version to be equipped with the powerful L/43 and L/48 guns was the Ausf. F and some months later the F/8 followed. The combination of low profile and firepower proved to be deadly. In many combat situations the StuG units had more success than the Panzers. Due to design improvements and simplification of manufacturing, a new version was introduced in November/December 1942: the Ausf. G. The first production lot of the Ausf. G showed many similarities with the Ausf. F/8.

You can find in literature on Armoured Warfare designs that existed on the drawing board, or existed only as prototypes, never being put into production. We also find models that were real, but shrouded in a fog of mystery and sometimes contradictory, or vague data and this is the case with the interesting Minenraumer, mine clearer. We turn to the monograph written by Mikhael N. Svirin, Rosagraph Collection No 13, whose research offers comprehensive and definitive information about the history of this vehicle. Some sources already considered it to have operated in the Battle of Kursk, hence a camouflaged example is offered as an option for finishing, others speak of evidence of their subsequent disappearance when the Germans evacuated Belarus. Other authors say it disappeared in Poland. Informed sources revealed to the author that the vehicle was found in August 1950, near a Soviet garrison in East Germany accidentally by an excavator. The conditions under which it was found and the facts are quite plausible as the vehicle appeared to have fallen into a bomb crater upside down with signs that the Germans had tried to destroy it before their retreat.

Pierwszy prototyp zbudowano do 1956 roku, a pierwszy lot na uwięzi wykonał on dopiero w 1959 roku. Spowodowane to było m.in. uszkodzeniami podczas prób naziemnych.
