Military Miniatures in Review No.16

Faring the vast numerical superiority of Soviet tanks in 1942, the duties of the successful assault gun units changed. Introduced originally to spearhead infantry attacks and to break enemy resistance, the necessity of fighting tanks became more and more essential. So assault gun units had to take over the main battle tank role, all too often leaving the infantry without support. Parallel to this development, the short barreled 7.5 cm gun was dropped in mid 1942, giving way to longer caliber guns. The first version to be equipped with the powerful L/43 and L/48 guns was the Ausf. F and some months later the F/8 followed. The combination of low profile and firepower proved to be deadly. In many combat situations the StuG units had more success than the Panzers. Due to design improvements and simplification of manufacturing, a new version was introduced in November/December 1942: the Ausf. G. The first production lot of the Ausf. G showed many similarities with the Ausf. F/8.
