THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE MARKS THE 60th Anniversary of the official end of World War Two, with the unconditional surrender of Japan on 15 August 1945. The War in the Pacific, as it is generally referred to, started at the end of 1941, on 7 December, with the Imperial Japanese Navy's pre-emptive strike on the US Navy's bases and installations at Pearl Harbor and simultaneous attacks on British and Dutch interests in the Far East, some two years alter the War in Europe had erupted in September 1939. More than anything, Pearl Harbor was responsible for bringing the United States of America into the conflict, which, following Ger many and Italy's immediate declaration of war against the super power, as part of the tripartite Axis, effectively turned it in to a truly global war.
