The difficulties the US Army experienced in the hedgerow country of Normandy in June 1944 are well known. The dense hedgerows, known locally as bocage, formed a natural defensive perimeter around most farm fields. The German forces skilfully exploited these terrain features to create an effective defensive barrier. What is less often appreciated is that the Wehrmacht suffered from the same difficulties when they attempted local offensive operations. In the pre-dawn hours of 11th July 1944, Panzer Lehr Division attempted a two-pronged attack using two kampfgruppe along the boundarv line of the 9th and 30th Infantry Divisions, towards St. Jean-de-Daye. To speed the attack, many of the German panzer grenadiers rode the panzers into action. Although the attack succeeded in making two small penetrations around Le Desert and Pont Hebert, by early morning the attack had been stopped and Panzer Lehr forced to withdraw by the combined action of infantry and tank destroyers. One kampfgruppe started with 244 panzer grenadiers and a company of 10 tanks, but returned to German lines with only 23 men. The US Army estimated that Panzer Lehr had lost 30 tanks in the attack, including over a dozen Panthers.

Sky Model No.01

Anche in questo caso le giunzioni fra i pezzi sono lontane dalla perfezio-ne, per cui, dopo aver incollato i semigusci con qualche punto di cia-noacrilica, ho stuccato le giunzioni con cianoacrilica catalizzata con cenere di sigaretta. Ad essiccazione compléta, ho car-teggiato il tutto ed ho applicato aile giunzioni dello stucco Molak. A questo è seguita un'altra levigatu-ra con carta ad acqua a grana 400, un'altra stuccatura con il Mr Surfacer 500 ed una levigatura finale con carta ad acqua a grana 1000. A questo punto ho deciso di autoco-struire completamente uno dei motori, affinché desse un tocco di vita ad una livrea che, sebbene molto accattivante, è piuttosto scura. Per realizzare il propulsore sono ricorso ad un segmento di tubo in PVC ed a materiali usuali quali pla-sticard, rame, ottone e lamierino di piombo. Il portellone aperto è quello originale del kit, assottigliato e detta-gliato internamente. Per chiudere f'argomento motori, ho realizzato gli scarichi partendo dagli attacchi di quelli del kit, di cui ho conservato solo una sezione da 3mm, autocostruendo il resto con plasticard da 0,25mm e rame. Ogni singolo scarico è costituito da un totale di 254 pezzi.

Depuis quelque temps on voit paraître quelques ouvrages thématiques spécialisés écrits dans notre langue, ce qui ne déplaira à personne tant il est vrai que la doc' spécialisée à l'usage des maquettistes est chose rare en français et que le fana moyen dû se débrouiller des années durant avec des ouvrages nippons ou anglo-saxons. La série « Les Ailes de la Gloire » qui nous avait déjà donné une première livraison consacrée à la saga des bimoteurs Breguet 690-700, poursuit son petit bonhomme de chemin en s'attaquent à un sujet décrit sous toutes ses coutures, mais surtout immortel, le Zéro. De la collaboration de Patrick Marchand avec l'illustrateur et dessinateur japonais Jun-ko Takamori est issu ce sympathique petit bouquin qui permettra au grand public de se familiariser avec le sujet pour une somme modique. Le contenu, réparti sur 48 pages, traite en premier lieu des principales versions du Zéro, avec des profils au trait jusqu'au A6M5-K d'entraînement qui ne fut jamais produit et en intercalant par endroits quelques paragraphes succincts sur le déroulement des batailles du Pacifique.

Modelling Armoured Vehicles

This book has been written primarily for modellers of a skill level of beginner to intermediate, and demonstrates techniques that can take their AFV modelling projects to a higher level of accuracy, detail and appeal. Unlike other titles in the Osprey Modelling Series, this book focuses on techniques rather than how to model specific vehicles. It describes how to conduct preliminary project research and provides tips on basic and advanced levels of construction. Painting, marking and weathering a model are demonstrated, along with various ideas for presenting a finished model with figures in a vignette or diorama. All of the work in the book has been done in 1/35 scale, but the methods demonstrated would apply to models of any scale. Five contributors have combined their efforts to present the reader with varied approaches to modelling. The projects chosen and the methods demonstrated cover a wide range of subject matter and skills.
